Shown below is my probable final kit list (with photo of the hardware, spot the differences from the initial list!). I’ll risk posting it now since it’s been stable for several weeks. Now it’s about time I got out there and put in some serious miles to test it all …

As hoped for, the realistic maximum rucksack weight thus comes in comfortably under my initial 15 lbs target, although that’s without food and water.
The final purchase involved some new Hi-Tec Sierra Lite boots, bought on the strength of ongoing good experiences with their Altitude Ultra V-Lite boots (which also use their ‘ion mask’ waterproofing technology) plus a winning review in a recent TGO magazine. I’ve already started putting a few lunchtime miles on the Sierras to wear them in; so far so good.
I’ve only had the one full ‘test pack’ so far, and it does all fit in the Rucksack, although it’s going to be a bit of a squeeze if I get hot weather and so only need to wear the thinner stuff.
Just been comparing your kit list, to the one I’m packing for the Southern Upland Way in April/May. You come in over a kilo lighter than me, so I’m trying to work out how
I see you don’t have a camera, but you do have ‘evening’ shoes, which I decided against. I decided on some waterproof socks to wear inside potentially wet boots in the evening.
I am packing my iPad though, my main luxury and something I’d really miss in the evening whilst blogging and keeping up to date on Twitter.
I may have to revisit my items and see if I reply need it all
I seem to be still adding to my own list! I bought some gaiters only about five days before the HW having got fed up with muddy trousers in a couple of recent practice walks. As it turned out I’d say they were pretty vital in the snow. And yes I’ve been pouring over your own lists also – and I agree – it’s your gadgets! However, even with a full water pouch and some food added, I can’t say I’ve ever really noticed the weight of the rucksack*, and I suspect the odd extra pound or two wouldn’t really change that. My evening shoes are also meant to double as fair weather walking shoes – they are gore-tex lined so supposedly waterproof – but I may rethink that one because I’ve become increasingly happy with my boots.
*I should admit at this point that on the HW I did leave the shorts and sun-cream at home …
